Lunch at Miss Marmalade, Brunswick

My Mum and I like to have lunches or coffees out every so often. I love sharing new and interesting places with her and sometimes surprise her as to where we're going. Once when we were in the city (Melbourne) I decided to take her to Madame Brussels and she just loved the experience. So just the other day I decided to surprise her once again with a trip to a favourite cafe of mine - Miss Marmalade. I would have to say it's one of my favourite places to go for coffee or brunch when I'm down that way, but I've never had lunch there before.
Excuse the picture quality here - I was trying to discreetly take a photo of the front of the store. We were seated in the front part of the cafe - there's another room out back as well. I love the brick walls in this part of the cafe though - it always makes it feel so warm and cosy. And the old wine bottles hanging against the wall look very cool.
This is my latte ($3.50 - coffee by 5 Senses) - it looked better in real life and on my camera, but clearly it hasn't come out looking very good here. Miss Marmalade do great coffees - I haven't had a bad one in the few times that I've been there! :)
I loved the way they presented my Mum's coffee. She likes to have it extremely weak and often has to send coffees back for being too strong. (I know, painful lol) But here they've heated and frothed the milk, and put the shot of coffee in a tiny jug - so she can make up her coffee to her own liking.
This is what we both had for lunch. It's the Toasted Brioche with slow-braised pulled BBQ pork, topped with coleslaw made with apple, walnut, radish and spring onion, and Ancient Roman mustard ($13.50). It tasted delicious! I loved the soft, sweet pork that just melted in my mouth, and the sweet brioche went very well with it. If I had one complaint about the dish it would be that the coleslaw overpowered the taste of the pork a little bit, but still, overall, it was a wonderful dish.
Each table is decorated with some vintage style adornments - the water come in an old style milk bottle, the sugar in these gorgeous little bowls with little spoons and the cutlery is kept in these tin mugs that remind me of my camping days as a child (but cuter of course!).
I love these lights against the backdrop of the blackboard painted back wall. It fits really well with the overall vintage, but cosy feel of the cafe. Definitely worth going back to Miss Marmalade for either breakfast or lunch - there's still a few dishes I haven't tried yet!

  4. Great review Claire! I love the breakfasts and coffee at Miss M's also! Love the back room where Ruby can play and not have to sit in a high chair the whole time. A great place to take the kiddies! There are many more meals that I will be back to try!
I think the 'coffee in a jug' served with the prepared milk is an excellent idea for those 'fussy' coffee drinkers among us :-)
Looking forward to your next review, oh and perhaps approaching the staff at the eateries you visit may make it easier to take the photographs you desire. I sure most places would be more than happy with the free advertising! ;-)

    1. That back room is a great idea. I'm sure it is (or it should be) a big draw card for many parents.

Thanks, I have to try to get to more cafes and remember to take photos while I'm out. I feel silly doing it, but I just have to gain my confidence and just do it!
